The View Point Newspaper: a place for students to find their voice

The View Point Newspaper interviews with students, the founder, and more.

The newly established student-run newspaper at High Point University, The View Point, has experienced tremendous growth and attention since November of 2023. The newspaper embodies a mission to serve the High Point University community by giving a voice to the voiceless and allowing students a safe space to share their writing and opinions. 

With the entirely student-led team, the writers and editors at The View Point are solely responsible for the distribution and publishing of stories. 

Feature writer and editor, Payton Kiasevicz, notes the impact that this independence has given her and other writers, “Thanks to The View Point, I have had the opportunity to interview people, make connections, edit and work on my writing. Classes have taught me so much, but writing for The VP and getting that real-life, hands-on experience has been the most beneficial thing I have done so far.” 

Besides bolstering independence and gaining experience working as a team, The View Point encourages its writers to report on stories they truly enjoy and have an interest in. ​

“As a sports media student, The View Point has been a great step towards my future career aspirations and allowed me to strengthen my experience in a field I am passionate about,” said Nick Allen, sports writer and editor for The View Point.

Collaboration and community are the founding ideals of The View Point. From planning to writing to publishing, the team strives to create a space where everyone feels welcomed. 

“I came into college as a neuroscience major and quickly found that it was not the place for me. Going from the sciences to communications, I struggled with getting involved and finding where I belonged, but since I found The View Point, I immediately knew I found my place,” Kiasevicz said. 

By establishing their platform, The View Point team has created something incredible for student writers on High Point University’s campus. 

“The VP has been the most defining experience of my college education so far,” Kiasevicz said. 

With the combination of teamwork, independence and creativity, The View Point is giving students and professionals new ways to embody journalistic practices. 

“There is so much value in making connections, networking and simply meeting people with similar interests as me. We have such a strong team and we have done so much to get where we are today,” Allen said. 

The View Point team is looking forward to the future and working hard to make sure their work is seen.

“This is something that needs to be continued because there are always going to be stories out there that need to be told. The VP has a very bright future and it has been so amazing knowing that there are people out there rooting for us,” Kiasevicz said.
