There had been some rumors about the possibility that our head coach, Alan Huss, could leave during the High Point Men’s basketball team’s first ever March Madness tournament appearance. However, our biggest fear didn’t turn into a reality until Thursday April 10 at lunchtime. It was revealed that Huss would be heading back to his alma mater, Creighton, as a head-coach-in-waiting.

In his two seasons with the Panthers, he led us to a 56-15 record, back-to-back in season big south champions and a big south tournament championship win against Winthrop en route to the NCAA tournament.

“Walking away from a program, roster, and university that are all healthy and on the rise was one of the hardest decisions of my life. My wife and I met at Creighton, and it is our alma mater- This was a deeply personal decision for our family. But know this: Flynn Clayman has been aside me every step of the way- and High Point’s future is in exceptional hands. This isn’t the end- It’s the start of a new chapter. The foundation is strong, the momentum is real, and the program is going to continue to grow, evolve, and reach even greater heights.” Huss said in his Instagram post thanking HPU.

We also lost some key players to the transfer portal such as guard Kezza Giffa, forward Kimani Hamilton and center Juslin Bodo Bodo. The school declared in the evening on Friday April 11 that Flynn Clayman has been appointed as our new head coach.

Since then, Bodo Bodo has committed to Baylor University. Hamilton is heading to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Giffa has visited schools like the University of Southern California and the University of Iowa.

Other players are returning to HPU, such as Terry Anderson, Chase Johnston, Josh Ibukunoluwa and Braden Hausen. HPU has also had seven players from outside the program commit to playing for the Panthers.

Even with Huss gone, the program he has built is in good hands and will continue to prosper.
