High Point women’s basketball continues its dominance in the Big South, capturing its second straight conference championship to secure a spot in the NCAA Tournament. With the victory, the Panthers earned their third appearance in the “Big Dance” and are hoping to carry that momentum with them into the postseason.

When heading to the conference tournament High Point had one goal in mind. That goal was to walk out as conference champions and be awarded an automatic bid to the “Big Dance.” For the Panthers this dream became a reality as the team made the tournament for the second consecutive season, doing so in head coach Flynn Clayman’s first year after the departure of Alan Huss. There had been some rumors about the possibility that our head coach, Alan Huss, could leave during the High Point Men’s basketball team’s first ever March Madness tournament appearance. However, our biggest fear didn’t turn into a reality until Thursday April 10 at lunchtime. It was revealed that Huss would be heading back to his alma mater, Creighton, as a head-coach-in-waiting.

For the first time since the 2015-16 season under Head Coach Scott Cherry, the High Point University men’s basketball team clinched the Big South conference regular season championship on senior night, Wednesday, as HPU defeated Winthrop, in an overtime thriller, 100-96.

For the first time in the program’s history, High Point University’s men’s basketball team is ranked in the mid-major top 10. In addition to the hard work on the court, many credit their success to the team’s chemistry. Four of the key players on the basketball team are from outside of the United States. They credit their cultural diversity for helping them bond and become a stronger team.

High Point University recorded its 20th win of the season and extended their win streak to 12 games as Kezza Giffa led the way with a game-high 26 points, and Duke Miles added 18 in a 78-68 win against Presbyterian College on Feb. 3.
