The first round of the women’s bracket starts Wednesday at 6 p.m. with No. 8 Gardner-Webb playing No. 9 UNC Asheville. For the first time since the 2015-16 season under Head Coach Scott Cherry, the High Point University men’s basketball team clinched the Big South conference regular season championship on senior night, Wednesday, as HPU defeated Winthrop, in an overtime thriller, 100-96.

For the first time in the program’s history, High Point University’s men’s basketball team is ranked in the mid-major top 10. In addition to the hard work on the court, many credit their success to the team’s chemistry. Four of the key players on the basketball team are from outside of the United States. They credit their cultural diversity for helping them bond and become a stronger team.

Lauren Bevis has been nothing short of spectacular for the Panthers thus far this season. Her tremendous scoring ability has helped carry High Point University to numerous favorable outcomes, but sometimes that scoring ability overlooks everything else she can do on the basketball court that is helping lead the team. Sometimes it is her defensive instincts and quick hands to swipe the ball on the defensive end of the court.

High Point University recorded its 20th win of the season and extended their win streak to 12 games as Kezza Giffa led the way with a game-high 26 points, and Duke Miles added 18 in a 78-68 win against Presbyterian College on Feb. 3.

The High Point University Panthers defeated the Longwood University Lancers on Thursday Feb. 1, 93-76, in front of a packed Qubein Center under the big lights. Kezza Giffa led the way for HPU with a game-high 24 points.
