High Point women’s basketball continues its dominance in the Big South, capturing its second straight conference championship to secure a spot in the NCAA Tournament. With the victory, the Panthers earned their third appearance in the “Big Dance” and are hoping to carry that momentum with them into the postseason.
This team was one of the better teams in recent history, finishing the season with a 27-5 overall record while going 13-3 in conference play, earning them the regular season title. They separated themselves from other teams with outstanding defense that held opposing teams to an average of 58.8 points per game - ranking among the top 50 in the nation.
When heading into the conference tournament in Johnson City, Tennessee they were aware of the target they had on their back as every team that stepped on the court was looking to knock them off. The first two games of this tournament were relatively easy for High Point as they defeated South Carolina Upstate 71-53 on March 5 and followed that up by defeating Winthrop 79-63 on March 7. On March 8 the team faced Radford in the conference championship game, it was close the entire way with both teams exchanging blows. In the end, it was High Point that walked out victorious with a 71-67 victory.
What stands out about this year's team is its chemistry, ball movement, and depth. The team averages right around 15 assists per game and has nine players averaging at least five points per game. Some of the big names on this year's roster include senior guard Aaliyah Collins, junior guard Macy Spencer, and senior forward Neveah Zavala.
As they head into tournament time the Panthers are hoping to carry all of this momentum onto the national stage. They will face off against the No. 2 seed Vanderbilt Commodores tonight in Nashville, Tennessee.
