At High Point University, there are many clubs and extracurricular activities that students can choose from. Some are directly geared toward advancing in your major, others offer a fun hobby to help unwind from college life, and the rest exist as a way to bring the student body together to make connections.

Some of these clubs are more well-known than others, while a few may surprise some people that these are things even being offered.

High Point University has a fashion merchandising program alongside visual merchandising classes that can help students in the department. This is a lesser-known program at the college, but a fun and interactive one, for sure.

As far as clubs go, there are two of its kind that are similar, but also unique in nature. The first is Fashion Forward. This club is for fashion majors by fashion majors. The club’s president, Chloe Koper, has made the club what it is today due to her driven attitude over the past few years.

“I’ve got to build a foundation and create exciting events for students, gain good resume building and also have a ton of leadership skills too,” Koper said.

This club hosts monthly meetings to bring the fashion department together by planning events that are educational and fun. One of the last meetings was a materials and textiles workshop where students went to make their own booklet with a plethora of fabrics. A guest speaker from an interior design company joined the meeting to explain what each fabric was and how it differs in both the fashion and interior design industries.

The highlight of the club, however, is a trip held every spring where members set out to take on the big city. Typically hosted and planned in March, Fashion Forward takes a trip to New York City for a long weekend.

The club explores the Fashion District and visits the renowned Fashion Institute of Technology Museum, which showcases both student work and professional pieces from the fashion industry — successfully covering all aspects of fashion. Students also have the opportunity to explore nearby museums and, of course, go thrifting.

At the end of the trip, there’s a major networking opportunity: a coordinated alumni brunch where students can enjoy a meal while striking up conversations with graduates who now have real-world experience in their field of study.

This trip is open only to fashion majors and minors, but if you’re looking to dip your toes into the fashion industry in a different way, Thrift Point is here to help.

Thrift Point is a club dedicated to promoting sustainability on campus and providing clothing to support students’ success. As a college student, expenses often go toward education, so instead of scrambling to find the “perfect” outfit for an interview or internship, Thrift Point offers just that.

Each spring and fall semester, Thrift Point organizes its well-loved pop-up shop. Throughout the months leading up to the event, students can contribute clothing donations to boxes placed across campus. These items are then sold at low prices to provide accessible and beneficial wardrobe options for their peers.

Much like Fashion Forward, Thrift Point hosts monthly meetings featuring workshops, fun events and community-building activities — all centered around sustainability and thrifting.

Ultimately, both clubs offer incredible opportunities for anyone passionate about fashion, always welcoming students from all areas of study to get involved and express their creativity.
